Slovakia. Fire in the mine – Polish miners among the injured

Nine miners were injured after methane ignited in the Novaky hard coal mine in western Slovakia. According to the rescue services, the condition of four, including two Poles, is serious.

The wounded miners have burns on their faces, necks and hands. Their families have been informed of the accident.

According to preliminary findings, there was a sudden and unexpected methane ignition at the scene, not an explosion, said Slovak Economy Minister Karel Hirman. According to the ministry, there was no significant damage to the mine.

There were 70 miners in the area when the fire broke out.

Prime Minister Slovakia Eduard Heger announced that the situation is stable and the prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation. He also said that all the injured people left the mine on their own and walked two kilometers from the place of the fire.

The circumstances of the accident, apart from the prosecutor’s office, are also to be investigated by the inspectors of the Mining Office from Banská Bystrica. There was a night shift in the part that was not affected by the fire.
