NATO Allies are considering deploying troops to Slovakia – reported the Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korczok after a meeting with deputies from the parliament’s foreign affairs committee.

According to Sky News, additional NATO forces would also operate in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. – There are such deliberations among the allies, but no decision has been made – added the head of Slovak diplomacy.

He stressed that the possible deployment of NATO troops in Slovakia was not a result of Bratislava’s request. – It’s part of normal defense planning, a reaction to the situation. We are part of a defense alliance and this defense of the Alliance is not only on paper, we must have some military structures for that – he said.

The minister added that similar structures operate in the Baltic states and in Poland. Korczok said the government had not made any decisions on this matter. The admission of foreign soldiers would require parliamentary approval.

Military agreement between Bratislava and Washington

The Slovak media note that comments on the possible deployment of NATO forces in Slovakia coincide with the discussion on the military framework agreement between Bratislava and Washington. The opposition is against it, which intends to hold a referendum on this matter.
