In an open letter to the Prime Minister, a group of Slovak psychiatrists and psychologists assessed that his actions were changing political culture and polarizing society. They called on Robert Fica to self-reflect or leave politics. In response, the head of government assessed that the specialists had abused their professional vocation and threatened to inform international associations about their activities.

More than 100 Slovak psychiatrists and psychologists called on Prime Minister Robert Fico to self-reflect or leave politics. The authors of the letter emphasized that they did not assess the personality of the head of government. However, they are concerned about changes in political culture Slovakia and in the perception of democratic values, which occurs under the influence of the prime minister's activities and the assessments he expresses. They also expressed concern about the internal political situation and international position of Slovakia.

“Your political behavior is increasingly characterized by an authoritarian style, manipulation of facts, lies, ridicule and attacks on political opponents, journalists and ordinary citizens who show that they disagree with your policies,” the experts wrote. In their opinion, the prime minister's political behavior and the opinions he formulates polarize society and influence emotions.

Doctors and psychologists pointed out that the prime minister's aggression and emotional impulsivity intensified after the attack on him, when in May 2024 he was shot. They emphasized that the stress the Prime Minister experienced may have consequences for him in the future.

The initiators of the open letter are titled professors: psychologist Anton Heretik and psychiatrist Jozef Haszto. They emphasized that they have never been and are not members of political parties.

Fica's answer

The Prime Minister responded to the open letter online. He found that the authors had abused their professional vocation for political purposes. He threatened to inform international associations about their activities.

Fico also wrote in response that he had no doubt that professors would support the “Slovak Maidan”, i.e. an opposition coup.

He emphasized that parliamentary elections are needed to change the government, not “pseudo-medical pamphlets.” In his opinion, the specialists who signed the open letter of the two professors are publicly known as opponents of the current government policy.

Robert Fico criticized for his pro-Russian course

Robert Fico has recently been criticized for taking a more pro-Russian course. In recent days, the Slovak has openly criticized Volodymyr Zelensky for ending the transit of gas from Russiawhich has flowed through so far Ukraineand its recipient was, among others, Slovakia.

The Prime Minister also threatened Zelensky that if he does not resume gas transit, he will veto European Union decisions on aid for Kiev, withhold humanitarian aid – for example regarding mine clearance – and the supply of electricity, and limit aid to Ukrainians staying in Slovakia. .

The December crisis had an additional negative impact on tense Slovak-Ukrainian relations Fico's visit to Moscow and talks in the Kremlin with Vladimir Putin.

The politician's actions are also met with dissatisfaction among Slovaks. Last week several thousand people gathered in front of the government headquarters in Bratislava. The demonstrators demanded that the Prime Minister stop cooperation with Russia and change the direction of the country's foreign policy.
