Pupils and teachers of one of the primary schools in Słupsk had busy holidays. They refurbished four classrooms, corridors and a canteen. The school could have been supported by the local government, but as the director of the institution emphasizes, they wanted to show that they could do it themselves, and not reach out for money.

Primary School No. 9 in Słupsk is attended by less than 300 students. During the winter holidays, from 16 to 29 January, the facility underwent renovation. The management, due to limited financial resources, planned only to refresh a few rooms, but the students were so involved in the matter that much more was done. Within two weeks of work, four classrooms, corridors and a canteen were refurbished.

– Pupils, when they found out that the renovation of the school is planned, they themselves came to me that they wanted to help. They didn’t want to sit idle during the holidays, get bored and stare at their phones. They wanted to do something positive. We managed to do much more than planned. The plan was implemented in 300 percent, but it was only thanks to the fact that we had such committed students and helpers – emphasizes the director of Primary School No. 9 in Słupsk, Joanna Michalak.

There was no shortage of people willing to help, about forty people were involved in the renovation. In addition to students and teachers, parents and school staff also helped.

Beata Wolska, the janitor, who painted the canteen door herself, emphasizes that by doing renovation work and putting her effort into it, children learn to respect this type of activity.

“We didn’t want to reach out for money”

Materials for renovation were financed by parents and external sponsors. The school, thanks to the involvement of students, managed to save money, but, as the headmaster emphasizes, the institution was not forced to use the help.

– We have a lot of support from the local government, but we probably wanted to prove to ourselves that we not only expect and reach out for money, because since September we have received over 100,000 to equip the rooms, but that we can also give something of ourselves to the school – he explains.

As he admits, there is no shortage of ideas for further renovation works and holiday renovations are already planned.
