Smog hovers over Poland on Monday. Residents of some towns have been breathing poor quality air since morning. An RCB alert was announced for the Żywiec poviat in the morning. It’s no better in the evening. The worst situation is in the south of the country. Check the air quality in your city.
According to data at 9 pm, the worst air quality is in Zawiercie, where the local measuring station showed a PM10 concentration of 227 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), which is 378 percent of the daily norm. In Zabrze 162 µg/m3 was measured (270 percent of the daily norm), and in Rabka-Zdrój – 144 µg/m3 (240% of the daily norm).
In terms of PM2.5 dust, the air whose quality is described as bad was breathed by the inhabitants Lwowka Śląski. 105 µg/m3 was recorded there, which means 292 percent. daily norm.
RCB alert for the Żywiec poviat
County residents on Monday morning Żywiecki (Silesian Voivodeship) received an alert from the Government Center for Security (RCB) due to poor air quality.
“Attention! On December 5, poor air quality is forecast in terms of particulate matter PM10. Resign from outdoor activities” – it was written in the text message received by recipients in the poviat. In the evening there was air quality described as unhealthy. The measuring station measured the concentration of PM10 at the level of 110 µg/m3 (183% of the daily norm).
RCB Alert against smog is activated when the forecast of the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (GIOŚ) indicates that there is a risk of exceeding the average daily concentration of particulate matter PM10.
According to the Polish Smog Alert, in 2021 Żywiec was one of those cities where smog lasted the longest – 80 days.
One of the towns that is shrouded in smog at the beginning of the week is Dry Beskidzka (Lesser Poland Voivodeship). As reported by TVN24 reporter Mateusz Pół Chłopek in the morning, Airly sensors indicated that the permissible air quality standards were significantly exceeded there. In the case of PM10 dust by over 200 percent, and in the PM2.5 range by over 500 percent.
According to the data at 9 pm, presented by the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection, the concentration of PM10 in Sucha Beskidzka was 111 µg/m3 (185 percent of the daily norm), which indicates unhealthy air quality.
Long-term exposure to polluted air leads to a number of various respiratory and circulatory diseases. Doctors and services therefore appeal to avoid leaving the house if the air quality standards are significantly exceeded.
When the air is of good quality
We talk about good quality air when the concentration of harmful dust does not exceed:
– for PM10 dust – 60 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3);
– in the case of PM2.5 dust – 36 µg/m3;
– for benzene – 10 µg/m3.
What is PM10
PM10 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 10 micrometers. Its occurrence is associated, among others, with the combustion of solid and liquid fuels.
What is PM2.5
PM2.5 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 2.5 micrometers. According to the World Health Organization, it is the most harmful atmospheric pollutant for humans. It reaches not only the respiratory system, but also the circulatory system. It stays in our body much longer.
What is benzene
Benzo(a)pyrene is a carcinogenic and mutagenic chemical compound that is a representative of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Benzo(a)pyrene exhibits low acute toxicity and high chronic toxicity, which is related to its ability to accumulate in the body.
What is an RCB Alert
Alert RCB is an SMS alert system against threats. You do not need to sign up for the RCB alert. People who find themselves in the area of a potential life-threatening crisis situation will receive a short text message (SMS) on their mobile phone with information on the type of threat along with the location, as well as the source of the alert. It doesn’t matter which operator we have a contract with.
The amendment to the Telecommunications Law and some other acts of June 11, 2018 requires all operators to immediately send a message to all users in the area specified by the RCB director. Messages are issued only in exceptional situations that may actually threaten human life and health.
