Smog spread across Poland. The list of cities with the worst air quality on Friday evening includes Lębork, Otwock, Janów Lubelski and Białystok. Daily air quality standards are exceeded by several hundred percent.

According to data at 7 pm, the worst air quality was in Lęborkwhere the measuring station showed a PM10 concentration of 226 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), which is 377 percent of the daily norm.

In terms of PM10 dust, the air, whose quality is described as bad, is also inhaled by residents Otwockwhere 170 µg/m3 was recorded (283 percent of the daily norm), and also Janów Lubelski and Bialystokwhere 157 µg/m3 (262% of the daily standard) and 154 µg/m3 (257% of the daily standard) were measured, respectively.

There are several cities with poor air quality also in terms of PM2.5. It also belongs to them Lebork, where the concentration of this type of harmful particles in the air reached 222 µg/m3, which means 616 percent. daily norm. It’s also bad in Janów Lubelski, Otwock and Bialystok, where respectively 152 µg/m3 (422% of the daily standard), 147 µg/m3 (408% of the daily standard) and 133 µg/m3 (369% of the daily standard) were registered. The situation is slightly better, but significantly different from the good one, in Lublin – 117 µg/m3 (325% of the daily norm), Nakło above Notecia – 116 µg/m3 (322% of the daily norm), Siedlce – 101 µg/m3 (281% of the daily norm) i Żyrardów – 88 µg/m3 (244% of the daily norm).

In many other cities, especially in terms of PM2.5, the air quality is unhealthy or average. This for example WarsawRudnik nad Sanem, Nysa, Radom, Wschowa, Ełk, Solec Kujawski and Racibórz.

When the air is of good quality

We talk about good quality air when the concentration of harmful dust does not exceed:

– for PM10 dust – 60 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3);

– in the case of PM2.5 dust – 36 µg/m3;

– for benzene – 10 µg/m3.

What is PM10

PM10 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 10 micrometers. Its occurrence is associated, among others, with the combustion of solid and liquid fuels.

What is PM2.5

PM2.5 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 2.5 micrometers. According to the World Health Organization, it is the most harmful atmospheric pollutant for humans. It reaches not only the respiratory system, but also the circulatory system. It stays in our body much longer.

What is benzene

Benzo(a)pyrene is a carcinogenic and mutagenic chemical compound that is a representative of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Benzo(a)pyrene exhibits low acute toxicity and high chronic toxicity, which is related to its ability to accumulate in the body.
