Smog in Poland. Monday 18/12 Check the air quality

On Monday evening, smog covers towns in southern Poland. Pollution standards are exceeded by almost 400 percent. Check the situation in your area.

On Monday at 8 p.m. the worst air quality was in Kłodzko. The measuring station located there showed the concentration of PM10 dust at the level of 205 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), which means 342 percent of the daily norm. The concentration of PM2.5 dust was 146 µg/m3, or 406%. daily norm.

Poor air quality was also present Krapkowice. The concentration of PM10 dust reached 150 µg/m3, i.e. 250%. daily norm. As for PM2.5 dust, 142 µg/m3 was measured there, which means 394%. daily norm.

Residents breathed air of unhealthy quality in terms of PM10 dust Nowa Ruda – 134 µg/m3 (223% of the daily norm), Sucha Beskidzka – 133 µg/m3 (222% of the daily norm), Rabka-Zdrój – 126 µg/m3 (210% of the daily norm) i Głubczyce – 118 µg/m3 (197% of the daily norm). In terms of PM2.5, unhealthy air quality was recorded in Polanica-Zdrój – 78 µg/m3 (217% of the daily norm), Jelenia Góra – 63 µg/m3 (175% of the daily norm) and Nysa – 62 µg/m3 (172% of the daily norm).

When the air quality is good

We talk about good quality air when the concentration of harmful dust does not exceed:

  • in the case of PM10 dust – 60 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3);
  • in the case of PM2.5 dust – 36 µg/m3;
  • in the case of benzene – 10 µg/m3.

What is PM10

PM10 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 10 micrometers. Its occurrence is related, among other things, to the combustion processes of solid and liquid fuels.

What is PM2.5

PM2.5 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 2.5 micrometers. According to the World Health Organization, it is the most harmful atmospheric pollutant to humans. It reaches not only the respiratory system, but also the circulatory system. It stays in our body much longer.

What is benzene

Benzo(a)pyrene is a carcinogenic and mutagenic chemical compound that is a representative of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Benzo(a)pyrene has low acute toxicity and high chronic toxicity, which is related to its ability to accumulate in the body.
