Smog hangs over Poland. On Tuesday evening, the air quality is poor in places and the pollution concentration standards are exceeded. Find out where it is most difficult to breathe.

According to data from 8 p.m., on Tuesday evening the worst air quality in terms of PM10 dust was recorded in Działdowo, where the measuring station indicated 283 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), i.e. 566 percent of the daily norm. Residents also breathed poor quality air Skarżyska-Kamienna (166 µg/m3, i.e. 332 percent of the daily norm) and Kościerzyna (145 µg/m3, i.e. 290 percent of the daily norm).

At the same stations, serious exceedances of PM2.5 dust standards were also observed. IN Działdowo the measured concentration was 277 µg/m3, i.e. 1108 percent of the daily norm, in Skarżysko-Kamienna – 158 µg/m3, i.e. 632 percent of the daily norm, and in Kościerzyna – 136 µg/m3, i.e. 544 percent of the daily norm.

In addition, unhealthy or average air quality in terms of PM10 and PM2.5 dust content was observed at many stations in southern, western and central Poland.

When the air quality is good

We talk about good quality air when the concentration of harmful dust does not exceed:

  • in the case of PM10 dust – 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3);
  • in the case of PM2.5 dust – 25 µg/m3.

What is PM10

PM10 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 10 micrometers. Its occurrence is related, among other things, to the combustion processes of solid and liquid fuels.

What is PM2.5

PM2.5 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air with a diameter not exceeding 2.5 micrometers. According to the World Health Organization, it is the most harmful atmospheric pollutant to humans. It reaches not only the respiratory system, but also the circulatory system. It stays in our body much longer.
