In Valencia, thermometers on Monday showed almost 27 degrees Celsius. This is the highest temperature in January in January in over a century of measurement history. The places were even hotter. Unusual heat is associated with the Herminia storm, which only a few hundred kilometers further brought heavy snowfall.
According to the Spanish meteorological agency Aemet, Monday was the warmest day in the history of January measures in Valencia. At 14 o'clock local time, thermometers at the meteorological station showed 26.9 degrees Celsius there – by 0.3 degrees more than the previous record from 2018. Measurements in Valencia have been carried out since 1869.
Warm but windy
Extremely warm, was recorded in the Walencia in the Miramar commune, where at 15 the temperature increased to 27.8 degrees C. Unusual values were also observed in the neighboring province of Alicante, where in the municipality of Pego thermometers showed a maximum of 27.4 degrees C.
High values on thermometers are associated with storm Herminia, who also takes its toll on the inhabitants of Portugal, France and Great Britain. The lowland system incurs hot, dry air into the areas of south-eastern Spain, also bringing strong gusts of wind. On Monday in the province of Valencia, the wind accelerated to even 110 kilometers per hour.
Snowstorms go crazy in the north
In other regions of Spain, Herminia brought completely different meteorological conditions on Monday. Intensive snowstorms occurred in the regions of the city of Leon and the Cantabrian mountains. In several dozen minutes, the white down covered many towns. Aemet introduced yellow warnings for several regions in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
The greatest rainfall occurred in areas located above 900 meters above sea level. The first wave of snow occurred in the morning when thermometers showed -6 degrees Celsius. It also started raining in the afternoon, and the snowstorm was accompanied by a strong wind.
Yellow alarms before heavy snowfall will apply in northwestern Spain until Tuesday. According to forecasts, in some regions a snow cover can reach up to 10 centimeters. On Monday, in the part of the autonomous community, Castile and Leon are due to warnings against strong wind, whose gusts can reach 90 km/h. Herminia, which moves over the region, also carries rainfall, which arouse concerns about the increase in water level in the rivers.
