The combination of frost, strong gusts of wind and very high humidity on Śnieżka caused the perceived temperature there to be -35.55 degrees Celsius on Saturday. IMWM synoptics emphasize that this is a completely natural phenomenon. They explain them using the example of a sauna and explain why, for example, on Kasprowy Wierch we will not be as cold today as on the Karkonosze peak.

On Saturday, the perceived temperature dropped to -35.55 degrees Celsius on Śnieżka, the Karkonoski National Park informed on Twitter. “On Śnieżka the temperature is -4.2 degrees C, but with wind 83 kilometers per hour and humidity of 98 percent, the perceived temperature is as high as -35.55 degrees C” – we read in the information from KPN.

Why is it so cold on Śnieżka? Translates the synoptic IMGW

According to Jakub Gawron, a synoptician of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, such a discrepancy in the temperature read on the thermometer and felt by humans is a normal phenomenon. – At the moment there is a freezing fog on Śnieżka, and in the last hour the wind gusts reached 101 kilometers per hour. So we have an accumulation of very strong wind, low temperature and humidity in the air, which must translate into a subjective feeling of coolness – he said. As he added, “we have a similar phenomenon in the sauna.” “In a dry sauna the temperature threshold that can be tolerated is higher than in a steam sauna,” he explained.

He cited an example of one of the Tatra peaks. – At the moment it is -5.4 degrees Celsius on Kasprowy (Wierch), snow has fallen, but the wind is blowing at a speed of 7 kilometers per hour, so the subjective feeling of people staying there at the moment will be different than that of tourists or IMWM employees on Śnieżka – said Gawron.
