So muggy you can cut the air. This is not the end of the difficult and tiring weather in Poland

Hot, humid air flows into Poland from southern Europe. It will cause the temperature to exceed 30 degrees Celsius in parts of the country on Wednesday, bringing muggy and muggy weather. According to tvnmeteo.pl forecaster Arleta Unton-Pyziołek, such tiring weather will not leave us in the coming days. Therefore, it is worth remembering the rules that will help us cope with such weather conditions.

A wedge of hot and muggy air from Spain entered Poland on Tuesday, resulting in temperatures rising to 30-31 degrees Celsius in some places in the south. It was so muggy that the air could be cut – writes tvnmeteo.pl forecaster Arleta Unton-Pyziołek. On Wednesday, the situation will repeat itself as tropical air reaches the southern and eastern regions of the country. High in Tatra Mountains and the Karkonosze Mountains, the temperature will increase to 15 degrees C. At an altitude of 1.5 kilometers, the temperature over Poland will range from about 5 degrees C over the Szczecin Lowland to 18 degrees C over the Bieszczady Mountains. These values show how hot the air mass pushing in from the southwest is and how cold and harsh the polar air is pushing in from the north Atlantic.

The zone of collision of air masses runs over our country. In the morning, the front passed over the Suwałki region, Masuria, northern Masovia, Greater Poland and the Lubuskie Province. There was thunder only in the north-eastern parts of Poland, but storms during the day they will break into storms, which will be helped by a strong influx of solar radiation.

“A full-blooded, perfect start to summer”

We have a full-bodied, excellent start to summer, although the weather is tiring for many and the phenomena pose a threat. This year, the longest day falls on Thursday, June 20 and will last almost 17 hours. The sun has plenty of time to heat the already very warm air masses over part of the country.

The predicted maximum temperature for Wednesday will have a huge range, ranging from about 16 degrees C at the seaside, through 19 degrees C in the Szczecin Lowlands and Kashubia, to 31 degrees C in Małopolska. But locally, in the zone from the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland to the Lublin region, higher values are possible, as calculated by the model of the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

The heat can be difficult to bear

For a healthy person, a high temperature should not be a big burden, for many it will be a reason for joy. Finally, the warm south will come to visit us. But for a sick person suffering from circulatory system diseases and venous problems, it will be a challenge.

Biometeorologists have proven that the inflow of tropical air generally causes a deterioration in Poles' well-being, especially the tropical marine air masses that form over warm ocean or sea waters, in the Azores High on the Atlantic or the western part of the Mediterranean Sea. It is very humid, resulting in muggy and muggy weather. In the 20th century, the frequency of their inflow into the region of Central Europe was approximately 1 percent. He has been visiting us more often in recent decades.

Huge humidity in the air

Hence, in the weather on Wednesday and Friday, when the second wave of hot air is expected to hit Poland, it is worth paying attention not only to the temperature values themselves, but also to the humidity of the tropical air mass and its saturation with water vapor. There is a certain quantity in meteorology that describes what we actually have to face. This is the equivalent potential temperature, describing what temperature a portion of air with an initial pressure of 1000 hectopascals would reach if all the water vapor contained in it were condensed and the latent heat of vaporization was released. In the light of the calculations of the American GFS model, if such an experiment were carried out today, the temperature would increase at an altitude of 1.5 km to 30 degrees Celsius over Pomerania, but in Silesia, Małopolska, Podkarpacie and Lublin region it would reach about 60 degrees Celsius.

It is also worth taking a look at the air humidity in the layer from the ground to 200 meters, which will be up to 50%. in the southeast, slightly worsening already difficult thermal conditions. But in the southwest of the country, in Silesia, it will be up to 90 percent. with a maximum temperature of 28-30 degrees Celsius. Biometeorological conditions here, as well as in the zone of the entire atmospheric front, will be very difficult to withstand. On Friday, the equivalent-potential temperature may reach up to 70 degrees Celsius over the southern regions of the country.

It is impossible to condense all the water vapor in the air over Poland in our own weather laboratory. But imagining such an experiment helps explain how much effort we will have to endure in an air mass in which the temperature rises at the beginning of summer to 30-33 degrees Celsius and the air humidity ranges from 50 to 90 percent.

The perceived temperature will be at least 30 degrees Celsius Wrocław32 degrees C Katowice and Lublin and 35 degrees C Krakow. In places it may reach 40 degrees Celsius. For a while, conditions similar to the jungle microclimate in tropical latitudes will prevail in the south, east and center of Poland. Therefore, sick and elderly people should be warned and encouraged to postpone all trips around the city and, as is the custom of Italians and Spaniards, take a real siesta in the afternoon.

How to deal with the heat?

Heat is dangerous to health and even life, especially for the elderly, the sick and children. The Government Center for Safety recommends drinking plenty of still water during hot weather, wearing a hat, light and airy clothing, limiting exposure to direct sunlight and using creams with a UV filter. Experts suggest not to leave the house unnecessarily, and to close and cover the windows during the day (opening them causes hot air to flow into the interior, and the curtains reflect thermal radiation and insulate).

RCB emphasizes that at high temperatures you should not drink alcohol, as it dehydrates the body and dilates blood vessels, which leads to even greater overheating.

Heat stroke most often occurs as a result of overheating of the head and neck. Staying in the sun for too long leads to disturbances in the thermoregulatory center, dehydration and a drastic loss of electrolytes. In the worst situation, loss of consciousness and breathing disorders may occur. Therefore, in hot weather, it is worth remembering to wear headgear – a cap, scarf or hat (or even an umbrella), a light diet, light and airy clothes, sunglasses and sunscreen.
