TikTok is gaining popularity not only compared to other social media. According to internal data from Google and TechCrunch, as many as 40 percent of the Z generation prefer to search for information on TikTok and Instagram, and not in Google search or maps.
Google’s senior vice president, Prabhakar Raghavan, admitted that TikTok is changing the way young people search for information online. At the Fortune conference, Brainstorm Tech found that, according to internal Google research, nearly 40 percent of young people when looking for a place to eat lunch do not visit Google Maps or a search engine, but TikTok or Instagram.
According to Raghavan, members of Gen Z do not tend to enter keywords, but rather look for content in new ways, willingly choosing visually rich media that is not limited to information. – We constantly learn that new Internet users do not have the expectations and mindset that we are used to – he notes.
“We are dealing with strong competition”
The vice president of Google gave an example of a map, stating that young people often do not know what the paper ones look like, while the applications were designed to look like a paper map, “glued” to the phone. Such solutions do not meet the expectations of the younger generations. – We have to respond to completely new expectations, and this requires completely new … technological foundations – he assesses.
Google wants to convince a younger audience and plans, among other things, to introduce to the search engine the possibility of moving the camera over the searched area and immediately collecting observations about many objects in a wider scenery.
TikTok one of the most popular applications
TikTok is one of the most popular social media outlets. App Annie, a digital analytics company, recognized it as the most downloaded application in 2020. According to the list, TikTok is the only application in the top five most downloaded applications in the world that is not owned by Meta (formerly Facebook).
TikTok is supposed to be an application that facilitates watching short movies and gives the possibility to create your own video materials. In September 2021, TikTok had one billion active users.
