An attempt to rent a vacation rental in Sopot ended with a couple from Zielona Góra losing their money. The apartment they wanted to rent existed only in an advertisement. The police are warning scammers against similar practices.

A couple from Zielona Góra booked a stay in a Sopot apartment that only existed on an ad website and lost 1.2 thousand zloty. The police appeal for caution when renting holiday accommodation.

– A 31-year-old from Zielona Góra and his fiancée found an offer to rent an apartment in Sopot on an advertising website. They contacted the 'landlord', set the price for a six-day stay for four people at PLN 2.4 thousand and paid half of that amount as a deposit – informed the press officer of the Sopot police, Senior Sergeant Lucyna Rekowska.

She added that a few days after paying the advance, they noticed the same ad with a negative comment on a social networking site. Then, as Rekowska said, they realized that they had probably been scammed. – To this day, the engaged couple has not recovered the money, and while in the Tri-City, they decided to report the matter to the Sopot police – she said, informing that the officers had accepted the report of fraud.

The press officer appealed for caution when renting accommodation and thorough verification of the property owner before transferring an advance payment.

– Let's check if the given address exists, because sometimes the ad concerns a street or address that does not exist. Online tools that allow you to locate the address can be helpful here – she said.

She added that before transferring money, one should compare the rental price with those of a similar standard and location, and that so-called super deals should arouse suspicion.

She reminded that if the facility operates legally, it should be registered with the city office. – Ask for an invoice, bill or receipt for the advance payment. Resistance in issuing the document should arouse our suspicions about the honesty of the offer – she said.
