A resident of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship left two dogs in a heated and closed car. The animals whimpered and panted heavily. Employees of the campsite where the vehicle was parked asked the police to intervene. It turned out that they had no food or water, but they had leashes pinned to the trunk lid.

The incident took place on Wednesday, July 5 in Sopot. Around 2 pm it was hot outside, around 26 degrees Celsius. Sopot police officers were alerted that two dogs locked in a car were noticed in the campsite. Facility staff were unable to contact the owner of the car.

On the spot, the uniformed officers noticed that in the car with German registration numbers, all the windows were covered with a cloth and the rear ones were slightly ajar.

– The dogs were in the trunk of the lair, and when they saw the policemen, they whined and panted heavily. Despite their desire to approach the half-open windows, they could not do so. In addition, one of the witnesses told the uniformed officers that the dogs had been in the car since the morning, informed the subcommander. Karina Kamińska, spokeswoman for the Provincial Police Headquarters in Gdańsk.

Out of concern for the animals, the officers lowered the window, opened by about 1.5 cm, and got inside the vehicle.

“They immediately felt the hot air coming from inside and noticed that the dogs couldn’t go out on their own. As it turned out, they were fastened with leashes caught in the trunk. One of the policemen went inside and pulled the dogs out. He also noticed that they had no water or food, emphasized Kom. Kamińska.

The dog owner will be punished

After watering the animals, the police took them to the vet. From there, they went to the house of the intervening police officer, where his family took care of them.

The dogs did not have implanted chips that would allow for quick identification of the owner, but as a result of the activities carried out, the police officers managed to make contact with him.

– A 52-year-old resident of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship was interrogated in the Sopot police station. If the evidence collected in the case proves that the car owner’s irresponsible behavior exposed the dogs to a direct threat of loss of life or health, violating the provisions of the Animal Protection Act, he may be punished with a fine, restriction of liberty or imprisonment for up to 2 years, said the KWP spokeswoman.

Cops have the right to break a window

Police officers warn that leaving a pet in a closed car or in a place exposed to strong solar radiation is a serious danger for it. In this way, his body may overheat, which may lead to a direct threat to life or health.

They sensitize that if they find that a longer stay of the animal in the car threatens its life, they have the right to use any means to get it out of the vehicle – including breaking the window. An irresponsible owner of a quadruped is subject to a fine, and in special cases, even criminal charges for animal abuse.
