On a beach in Sopot (Pomerania), a man took advantage of the carelessness of a woman who was caring for two children and stole her backpack with its contents. A fleeing 21-year-old resident of the Iława poviat (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship) was captured by a 35-year-old holidaymaker from Lower Silesia, relaxing by the water. When the police stepped in, it turned out that both of them were wanted – the first in connection with a fraud case, the second to serve a sentence for unpaid fines.
On Thursday (July 7), around 3 p.m., the officer of the municipal police station received a report that a man who was supposed to steal a backpack from a woman was caught on a beach in Sopot. The policemen sent to the scene confirmed this incident and arrested a 21-year-old girl from the Iława poviat, captured by a 35-year-old man, informed the Pomeranian Police.
The uniforms established that a woman with children was resting on the beach. At one point, the 21-year-old was supposed to take advantage of her inattention and steal her backpack, which contained, among other things, documents, clothes and food.
The man escaping with the loot was noticed by a 35-year-old resident of Lower Silesia, who was also relaxing by the water. He had already noticed this young man before and saw him walking among the sunbathers on the beach and looking at handbags and backpacks. The 35-year-old immediately chased the thief and captured him. Another witness who helped the 35-year-old and called the services appeared on the spot, the officers said.
The 35-year-old was also wanted
It turned out that the detained 21-year-old is wanted by the prosecutor’s offices in Mielec, Szczytno, Szczecin and Puławy for fraud cases. But a vacationer from Lower Silesia did not have a clean sheet either. “As a result of checking the 35-year-old in police bases, it turned out that he was also wanted by the judiciary. According to the judgments of the courts in Kraśnik and Lublin, he has to serve alternative prison sentences for a total of 18 days for unpaid fines for previously committed offenses” – the police said in a press release.
As it was explained, shortly thereafter, “a 35-year-old resident of the Lower Silesia Voivodship paid money in the amount of PLN 900 to the court’s accounts and thus freed himself from serving substitute imprisonment sentences”.
The recovered backpack with its contents was returned to the owner, while the 21-year-old resident of the Iława poviat was taken to a police cell. He was intoxicated, the breathalyzer showed him a concentration of alcohol in the exhaled air. When he is interrogated after sobering up, he is to hear charges for the theft of a backpack and the misappropriation of a document – a driving license.
