South Korea. A collision involving 50 cars on an icy road

Snowfall paralyzed South Korea. On Wednesday, up to 47 centimeters fell in places around the capital, Seoul. The winter attack also caused a dangerous collision involving over 50 cars, in which 11 people were injured.

Wednesday brought unusually heavy snowfall in South Koreawhich were also felt at night. By Thursday morning, Yongin city, part of the Seoul metropolitan area, received 47.5 centimeters of snow in places.

On black ice

Such heavy rainfall had an impact on the everyday life of Koreans. The Korea Herald website reported that there was a collision on Wednesday at a highway exit near the city of Wonju. 53 cars collided and 11 people were injured. On Thursday, police were still assessing the extent of the damage and determining the cause of the accident, but officers said the accident was most likely caused by black ice. Analysis of recordings from surveillance cameras showed that at the time of the collision, the road surface was covered with a layer of “black ice”.

Problems were not only reported on highways. Snow blocked at least 18 routes in Seoul, and the city authorities sent extra subway trips to the tracks to meet public transport demand. In addition, as of Thursday, over 150 flights and over 100 ferry services had been canceled or postponed.

By Thursday afternoon, more than 130 homes in Seoul had reported loss of power, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Security. Problems with access to electricity also occurred in cities belonging to the capital's metropolitan area.
