We introduce restrictions in the number and capacity of powerbanks that passengers of South Korean airlines will be able to bring – the Ministry of South Korea transport said on Thursday. The exacerbation of security measures is the aftermath of a dangerous fire, which in January exploded on board the Air Busan passenger aircraft.
Pursuant to the new regulations, passengers will be able to take a plane up to five mobile chargers with a maximum capacity of 100 watt hours each, and chargers with a capacity of over 160 watt hours will not be able to be on board at all. It will also be forbidden to charge powerbanki on aircraft. Airport employees will check the number and types of powerbanks during security control – said the South Korean transport department in a statement.
In addition, it was reported that storage of powerbanks and e-cigarettes in the storage space above the heads of passengers would be forbidden. As Reuters reminds, in accordance with global air standards, it was also forbidden to transport powerbanes in checked baggage, i.e. the one who goes to the luggage hatch on the aircraft.
Restriction of powerbanki in aircraft
The new regulations will come into force on March 1 and will apply on board all South Korean air carriers, informs “Korea Times”. They are the result of the event that occurred on January 28 at the Gimhae airport in Busan, South Korea. That day A fire broke out on the Airbus A321 aircraftwho was preparing to fly to Hong Kong. Representatives of the local fire brigade reported that all 169 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated from the deck, and one person with slight injuries was taken to the hospital.

Fear about fires in aircraft
According to the Air Busan carrier, to which the aircraft belonged, the flight attendant was the first person who noticed a fire coming out of the luggage compartment above the heads of passengers. Although the cause of the fire has not yet been officially transferred, the transport department has noted in a new statement that the decision to tighten security measures is “the answer to concerns related to potential fires of mobile chargers” – says Reuters.
