A massive fire broke out on top of Mount Inwang in downtown Seoul on Sunday. Firefighters were unable to control the blaze for more than 20 hours. The flames are currently being extinguished. About 120 people have been evacuated from the threatened area, the Korean Times newspaper reported, citing local authorities.

The fire on Mount Inwang, which is a popular hiking destination, broke out around noon on Sunday local time (Sunday morning in Poland) and spread rapidly due to strong winds. About 120 people were evacuated. So far, no deaths or injuries have been reported from the fire, Seoul authorities said.

The main fire was put out around 5pm on Sunday, but firefighters were still struggling to put out the smoldering, minor flames despite an all-night firefighting effort. By Monday morning, 98 percent of the fire had been extinguished, local authorities reported, quoted by Yonhap news agency.

The government estimates that about 15 hectares of woodland, the equivalent of 21 football fields, have been destroyed by the fire.

The police and fire department intend to launch an investigation into the cause of the fire once it has been brought under control. They don’t rule out arson.
