Eight immigrants died inside boats on a trip from Africa’s northwest coast to the Canary Islands. From Morocco, they tried to get by boat to the island of Gran Canaria.
According to the Spanish coastguard, the rescue services managed to reach the drifting vessel on Sunday morning about 40 nautical miles from the southern part of the island. Previous findings from the coast guard show that the boat with the immigrants was at sea for a week, and eight deceased passengers could not stand the hardships of the journey.
According to the regional media, all illegal immigrants traveling in the small boat are Moroccan nationals. The Spanish services managed to save 62 people inside the unit.
According to the Canarias7 daily, twelve boat passengers with exhausted immigrants had to be hospitalized by Sunday afternoon. Three of them are in a serious condition.
A regional newspaper reported that two other boats carrying illegal Moroccan immigrants had reached Gran Canaria on Sunday. There were 36 people in the first unit, and 40 in the second.
