Two thousand people have evacuated because of a fire in the mountains of Andalusia in southern Spain. Authorities said three firefighters were injured.
The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon in the area of the municipality of Pujerra in the popular tourist destination of the Costa del Sol on the coast of Andalusia. Two thousand people were evacuated from the city of Benahavís, which has a population of 7,000. Most of them took refuge with their families or in hotels.
500 firefighters are fighting the fire, eight firefighting planes have been commissioned for the action – said the services in social media on Thursday morning. The day before, it was reported that hot weather and wind fuel the fire.
Three firefighters injured
“We regret to inform you that three firefighters suffered various types of burns,” said Juanma Moreno, President of Andalusia. He also reported that one of the firefighters burned 25 percent of his body surface and was being treated at a hospital in Malaga.
In the area of the same mountain range where forests are now burning, at least 7,780 hectares of forest and brush were burned in September. About a thousand firefighters were working on the fire, supported by about 50 airplanes.
On Saturday, we reported on a fire that broke out in the outskirts of Athens. The local fire brigade then reported that several houses and cars were damaged.
