Police in Spain detained a 74-year-old pensioner on Wednesday, who was allegedly behind a series of packages with explosives sent at the end of last year to various institutions, including those related to the country’s defense. One of the parcels was addressed to the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez.

The man was arrested in the town of Miranda de Ebro, in the northwest Spain the country’s interior ministry said. Sources in the Spanish services have specified that the detainee is a pensioner who is the only suspect in the bomb letters.

Investigators quoted by the media from the beginning of the investigation pointed to the similar appearance of the parcels and the “same handwriting” on the envelope. They claimed that they had been sent from Spanish territory.

The shipments went, among others, to places related to defence

Since November 24, when the letter bomb was sent to Prime Minister Sanchez, packages with explosives have been sent to the Spanish Ministry of Defense, to one of the Zaragoza armaments companies, to the military base in Torrejon de Ardoz near Madrid, and also to embassies USA and Ukraine.

When trying to open mail addressed to the ambassador Ukraine in Madrid by Serhiy Pohoreltsev there was an explosion of the charge. An employee of the diplomatic mission was slightly wounded in the hand.
