On Wednesday, the Spanish meteorological agency AEMET issued the first heat alert in 2024. According to preliminary data, in the city of El Granado in the province of Huelva, the temperature rose to 41.2 degrees Celsius, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius for the first time this year in Spain. It was not much colder in Montoro near Cordoba, where 40 degrees Celsius was recorded.

Hot weather is also expected on Friday – in some areas in the Guadalquivir River valley, including around Cordoba, thermometers may show 40 degrees Celsius or more.

July hot

It was hot not only in the southern regions of the country. A heat warning was also in force in Madrid on Thursday. There, the maximum temperature was above 35 degrees Celsius, but at night it fluctuated around 20 degrees Celsius – such values are typical for July, not May. Residents and tourists tried to cool off by hiding in the shade and fleeing home.

– I drink water, I cool down every ten minutes. There is no other option, a saleswoman running a stall on the streets of the capital told Reuters. – Honestly, it's terrible. The heat is unbearable.

According to AEMET data, the value of 40 degrees C in May was first reached in 2006. Since then, it has also been recorded in 2010, 2012, 2015, 2022 and 2024. The heat on the Iberian Peninsula is expected to ease slightly over the weekend, but temperatures will start to rise again from the beginning of next week.
