The fire broke out late Friday evening in an Italian restaurant in the Salamanca district of central Madrid. The Reuters news agency, citing emergency services, said two men were killed and ten people were injured.
The fire broke out near the entrance to the restaurant in Piazza Becerra as a waiter was lighting a dessert with a gas burner in the culinary art of flambéing. According to witnesses, the flame reached the ceiling of the premises decorated with artificial plants. The ornaments on the ceiling and the walls lined with similar decoration took a few seconds.
Dramatic customer flight
Only customers staying close to the front door managed to escape quickly, while the others were trapped in the burning premises. Some of them took shelter in the kitchen, others looked for emergency exits. Pedestrians in the nearby street broke windows in the premises to help the trapped people get out.
Firefighters were able to control the fire and carry out rescue operations. Among the dead is a restaurant worker. The police are dealing with the case.
