On Sunday, large parts of Spain were hit by violent storms with strong winds and downpours. Several people were injured. In the port of Mallorca, a cruise ship collided with an oil tanker after the wind tore it from its moorings. There were problems at airports and railways.

Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Valencia were placed on an orange alert on Sunday, meaning a high degree of danger due to thunderstorms and strong winds and heavy rainfall. According to the national meteorological agency AEMET, wind gusts reached 100 kilometers per hour in Mallorca on Sunday morning.

The cruise ship hit an oil tanker in Mallorca

In the port of Palma, Mallorca, strong winds broke the moorings of the 330-meter-long Britannia cruise ship and pushed it against the oil tanker Castillo de Arteaga, the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) said.

The incident took place around 11 am. A hole was made in the tanker’s hull from the jetty side, the sea was not contaminated. The fire brigade, harbor police, mooring and tug crews intervened.

Several people were injured

At the port station in Palma, the storm broke the windows. Six tourists on the cruise ship were injured by shards of glass and taken to hospital.

At least 90 incidents related to strong winds have been recorded in the Balearic Islands, with the highest number in Mallorca. A pregnant woman was injured in the municipality of Calvia when a road sign fell on her. Marine services rescued two children who fell on the coastal rocks while swimming on a mattress.

Problems at airports and railways

Air traffic has been disrupted. By Sunday evening, 45 flights had been canceled or diverted at three Balearic airports – Palma, Ibiza and Menorca.

In Valencia, winds reached 100 kilometers per hour. There have been delays in running subway trains due to a fire caused by Thunder Strike.
