Winter has come to the Iberian Peninsula. Dozens of roads in Portugal and Spain are impassable due to snowfall. There is also black ice on many routes.
In Portugal, most of the difficulties occur in the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco, located on the north-eastern border with Spain, where snow has been falling since Sunday afternoon.
Most impassable roads were recorded on Monday in the Serra da Estrela mountain range, near the Spanish border, where snow is expected to fall at least until Tuesday afternoon.
Spain. Snowfall and icing
According to the Spanish General Directorate of Road Traffic (DGT), the most impassable roads due to snowfall occur in Cantabria, Asturias, Castile and Leon, as well as in Galicia.
According to the DGT report, several roads were closed for traffic in Catalonia on Monday morning due to heavy ice on the surface.
According to meteorologists, the situation on Spanish roads may deteriorate in the coming hours. By Monday afternoon, 11 out of Spain’s 17 Autonomous Communities had issued an alert about the upcoming snowfall and a significant drop in air temperature.
