After careful consideration, I have decided to remain as prime minister, said Spanish head of government Pedro Sanchez on Monday. Last week, he temporarily suspended his duties as a Madrid court launched an investigation into his wife, Begonia Gomez. She is accused of participating in a corruption scandal.

The head of the Spanish government, in line with previous announcements, announced the decision at 11 in a televised address. Spain's public broadcaster TVE reported that before the speech, Sanchez went to Zarzuela Palace to talk to King Felipe VI.

Reuters previously indicated four possible scenarios. Pedro Sanchez could have resigned or remained as head of government. He could also submit to a parliamentary vote of confidence and step down if he lost.

The fourth scenario assumed early parliamentary elections. Reuters reports that the earliest date allowed by the Spanish constitution is July 21.

He believes in his wife's innocence

An investigation into the wife of the Spanish Prime Minister was launched last Wednesday. The case concerns the alleged involvement of Begonia Gomez in corruption and the use of political influence, thanks to which she was supposed to develop her business activities. On the same day, the head of the Spanish government canceled his meetings and suspended his duties.

He also noted that he would say by Monday whether he would continue to lead the government that was formed after the elections of July 23, 2023. This is Sanchez's third office.

Pedro Sanchez, in a message published last week on social media, noted that he was convinced that his wife had not committed any irregularities. He suggested that the accusations against her were related to the political fight, as the report in this case was filed by the anti-corruption organization Czyste Ręce (Manos Limpias), which he described as “extreme right-wing”.

In the statement, Sanchez accused right-wing politicians, the leader of the People's Party, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, and the head of Vox, Santiago Abascal, of participating in the hate campaign against himself and his wife by fueling the media campaign. “Mr. Feijoo has already complained about this matter to the Conflict of Interest Office, requesting a ban on me from performing public functions for 5 to 10 years,” wrote Sanchez, adding that the authorities of this institution rejected the request.

So far “she hasn't been noticeable”

As noted by the Spanish portal Heraldo, although Begona Gomez is currently the center of attention throughout the country, until now she has “not been conspicuous”.

The prime minister's wife is 49 years old and a marketing specialist. She obtained her MBA in this field at the private, prestigious ESIC university in Madrid. However, she was professionally associated with the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the private university IE University. According to her LinkedIn profile, from August 2018 to May 2022, Gomez chaired IE's Africa Studies Center. In January 2020, she took up the role of director of UCM's Master of Science in Management in Competitive Social Transformation. The allegations currently made against her related to her role in these two positions.
