Spain’s Crown Princess Eleanor of Bourbon will return to her homeland this year to begin a three-year military course, Spain’s Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on Tuesday. The 17-year-old has been living in Wales since 2021.

Princess Eleanor, currently studying at UWC Atlantic College in Wales, will start her studies in Aragon in September 2023. In the first year of her military education, the heir to the throne will be among the students of the Main Military Academy in Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon.

The next two years, the daughter of Philip VI will spend at the military academies of the Spanish army in Pontevedra and San Javier, where the universities of the navy and air force are located. The current Spanish monarch studied in the same centers in the past.

“As in all parliamentary monarchies, the heir to the throne must have military experience and a military career,” explained Defense Minister Margarita Robles.

“In due course, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces will be a woman,” noted the defense minister. She added that in recent years the Spanish authorities have taken steps to “include women in the armed forces”.

Eleonora will turn 18 in October. She is first in the line of succession, unless a male child is born in the meantime. After Eleanor, her sister Sofia is in line for the throne.

Reuters reminds that the Spanish monarchy is trying to rebuild its image after a series of scandals over the past decade, mainly related to the person of the king Juan Carloswho abdicated in 2014 in favor of his son – Eleanor’s father – King Philip.
