A Spanish tennis participant has been banned till 2039 for match-fixing.

Aaron Cortes has been suspended from competing for 15 years after he admitted to match-fixing, taking bribes, betting on tennis and giving cash to officers to get a wild card, the Worldwide Tennis Integrity Company (ITIA) mentioned.

The 29-year-old, who reached a career-high world rating of 955 in September 2017, admitted to 35 breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Programme (TACP) that came about between 2016 and 2018.

Alongside his prolonged suspension which can see him out of tennis till 26 March 2039, he was fined $75,000 (£59,000), of which $56,250 (£44,000) was suspended, after an investigation by the ITIA and regulation enforcement.

Mr Cortes can be banned from attending, coaching, and training at tennis occasions authorised by ITIA members, together with the ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, French Tennis Federation, Wimbledon and USTA, or any nationwide affiliation.

The ITIA mentioned Mr Cortes’ prices included “contriving the result of occasions, accepting cash to contrive the result of occasions, failure to report corrupt approaches, wagering on tennis, and offering cash to event officers in alternate for a wild card”.

In a press release, the company added: “Cortes co-operated absolutely with the ITIA investigation and accepted an agreed sanction, waiving their proper to a listening to earlier than an unbiased anti-corruption listening to officer.

“The participant’s interval of ineligibility started on 27 March 2024 and ends at midnight on 26 March 2039.”
