The Polish Association of Speech Therapists opposes the draft law on certain medical professions adopted by the government. “Suddenly, 88 speech therapists out of 100 will lose the right to use their title, regardless of their previous work experience and qualifications” – they alarm. Health Minister Adam Niedzielski said that the act was “a response to the expectations of 250,000 people”. “If we see anything we can improve, we will of course improve,” he said.
the Council of Ministers adopted a draft act on certain medical professions, which concerns, among others, speech therapists. The Polish Association of Logopedists opposes the proposed regulations. He claims that “only about 15 percent of speech therapists in Poland work in the health service”, meanwhile “the effects of the proposed legal regulations will affect all speech therapists, most of whom work in educational institutions and private surgeries.”
Speech therapists sound the alarm
As the Polish Association of Speech and Language Therapists writes, the change in the regulations will “suddenly cause them to lose the right to use their title, unless they comply with the new law, which entails a number of costly obligations”. points out that there would be a need to meet double requirements in terms of professional development, required both in education and health department. “Private speech therapy offices will have to transform into medical entities with the same requirements as all medical facilities” – added.
This – we read – “as a result, may lead to the closing of private practices, leaving the profession, and thus limiting the availability of speech therapy”.
“Suddenly, 88 speech therapists out of 100 will lose the right to use their title”
According to the data of the Polish Association of Logopedists. out of 100 speech therapists employed, 12 people work in health care, 76 in education, 12 run private surgeries as part of business. “So after the introduction of the new law, suddenly 88 speech therapists out of 100 will lose the right to use their title, regardless of their previous work experience and qualifications” – write the speech therapists.
– Most speech therapists work in education – one of them, Michalina Plusczczewicz, confirmed in an interview with TVN24 reporter. – We work in kindergartens, schools, but also in medical facilities, combining our work with speech therapy offices. According to this act, we will have to transform our offices into medical entities, which we believe will be quite a challenge. We are afraid that most offices, including offices from smaller towns, where there are fewer premises, will be forced to close their activities – she explained.
Niedzielski: this is a response to the expectations of 250,000 people
Minister of Health Adam Niedzielski was asked about the protest of speech therapists on Friday at a press conference.
– This law was adopted by the government and is a response to the expectations of nearly 250,000 people who want their profession to be standardized, regulated and civilized – he argued. – We sanctioned education standards related to various professions, including speech therapist, optometrist. There are 17 of these competitions in total. The stage of discussion and work on committees is ahead of us. If we see any elements that we can improve, we will, of course, improve it, assured the head of the ministry.
He stated that “the project was consulted with all associations and organizations operating in the field of these 17 professions”.
