“You saved all of Hollywood’s ass,” Steven Spielberg told Tom Cruise at a luncheon for all of this year’s Oscar nominees. “You may have also saved theatrical distribution,” he added.

The conversation overheard during the ceremonial lunch was supposed to be private between Spielberg and the actor. Someone not very discreet, or simply sharing the view of the great director, made it public, however, and the video showing the conversation between the two men was posted on Twitter.

She was the first to share a video that shows the artists talking and Spielberg congratulating Cruise, nominated for Oscar for the short documentary “The Elephant Whisperers” by Indian director Kartiki Gonsalves. The video, which did not give a chance to learn the details of the conversation, revealed its content in the author’s written comment. Soon it went viral, and the Hollywood community shared its content among themselves at a dizzying pace.

As a result, the conversation went to all the most important trade magazines overseas.

Did Cruise Save the Dream Factory?

What exactly did the creator of “Fabelmans” say to the star and producer of “Top Gun”: Maverick?” The whole thing, and more precisely its “overheard” part, Steven Spielberg’s speech was a gigantic compliment addressed to Cruise.

“You saved my ass Hollywood. And you may have saved theatrical distribution at the same time. Seriously! Your ‘Maverick…’ could have saved the entire film industry, “said the creator of “Fabelmans” to the star of “Top Gun: Maverick”. According to “The Hollywood Reporter”, Cruise only listened and nodded to Spielberg. The gentlemen worked together twice: on “The Report minorities” in 2002 and “The War of the Worlds” in 2005.

Recall that the sequel to Cruise’s 1986 hit was the first film in 2022 to break the magic barrier of a billion dollars earned and only the second after the pandemic break. Cruise’s blockbuster also broke the box office dominance of superhero movies and, above all, brought older viewers back to the cinemas.

The premiere of “Top Gun” Maverick” was postponed multiple times for two years due to the pandemic. Cruise, counting on box office success, firmly pressed Paramount to wait for the possibility of a theatrical release and resist the temptation to make the film available on a streaming service. As you can see, he was right. In total, “Top Gun: Maverick” grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, with nearly $800 million in the United States alone, placing it at number one among last year’s releases.

The conversation between the two filmmakers is spiced up by the fact that both films are among the Oscar favorites of this year’s race. “Top Gun: Maverick” has six Oscar nominations and Spielberg’s biographical drama “The Fabelmans” has a shot at seven Oscars.

Tom Cruise’s comeback

Tom Cruise fans have been waiting 36 years for the continuation of Tony Scott’s hit “Top Gun”. It was worth it, because its continuation is considered by most critics and viewers, contrary to the law of the series, to be better. The Oscar nominations prove it.

The sequel continues the events of the first film decades ago. In “Top Gun: Maverick” after more than 30 years in the service of the US Navy, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) has reached the top. He is a master pilot, testing the most modern machines. He heads the special group, training its participants to participate in a mission that has never been before. He meets Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, who died during one of the missions.

Maverick must face an uncertain future and the events of the past. He places high demands on those who have been selected for a dangerous mission, and his didactic methods reflect the path he went through in his youth.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is an action movie of the highest order, not only because the heroes are pilots. In addition to the suspenseful plot, amazing aerial acrobatics in which the Cruise-pilot participated personally. There is a lot of humor and good acting in the film. There is also an obligatory love story, although the 65-year-old Kelly McGillis is no longer present, and Jennifer Connelly, almost a generation younger, has taken her place.

Since its premiere at Cannes in May 2022, the film has received nothing but rave reviews and turned out to be the biggest success of Cruise’s entire career. It is the only film starring the star to gross over a billion dollars.
