However, not only we and other Europeans, but also Mexicans, struggle with a similar problem. Their country was hit by Hurricane John, in which Acapulco suffered the most. According to the authorities, several people are missing and eight killed.
Heavy rains are accompanied by powerful winds. According to local media, it blows at speeds ranging from 195 km/h to 220 km/h. Such an element would destroy any city in the world.
$500 million stadium ruined
The hurricane did not spare the impressive tennis complex in Acapulco. GNP Seguros Arena opened in February 2022 and cost as much as $500 million. Photos and videos from the city show that heavy rains completely flooded the center court and side arenas.
The center court has a capacity of 10,000. places, and not only tennis matches, but also concerts and other events took place there. Over two years after the stadium's opening, concerts of Latin music stars and competitions were held there wrestling or padel.
Since February 2022, the ATP 500 men's tennis tournament has been held every year at the GNP Seguros Arena. Rafael Nadal won the first edition, and Alex de Minaur, who defended the title this year, won the second edition. Interestingly, Jan won this year's doubles tournament Zielińskiwho played with Hugo Nys.
It is not yet known how much the renovation of the brand new facility will cost. However, it seems almost certain that the Mexican Open will not take place next year. It is difficult to assume that the effects of the hurricane would be removed in just a few months.
