Starogard Gdanski. The prosecutor’s office discontinued the investigation after the fire in which three children died

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Starogard Gdański (Pomeranian Voivodeship) discontinued the investigation into the fire that killed three children in March 2022. As reported, the collected evidence did not allow to indicate the cause of the fire. The decision of the prosecutor’s office is not final.

Fire in the building at ul. Człuchowska in Starogard Gdański erupted on March 31, 2022. The press officer of the Poviat Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Starogard Gdański, junior midshipman Michał Swobodziński, said at that time that there was a lot of smoke in the apartment on the second floor.

At that time, 14 people were evacuated from the building, five of them using a hydraulic tractor: two people from the balcony of the apartment where the fire broke out, and three from the neighboring apartment. As a result of the fire, three children died: two girls – one less than a month old, the other one and a half years old – and a four-year-old boy.

Prosecutor’s Office: There was no deliberate action

– The obtained forensic medical opinions show that the cause of death of the children was thermal damage to the body integument coexisting with acute carbon monoxide poisoning – the spokesperson of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk, prosecutor Grażyna Wawryniuk, told PAP.

She added that no evidence was disclosed in the case that could indicate intentional action. – In the course of the proceedings, no findings were made that would justify the presentation of any charges – the prosecutor said. She indicated that the children’s parents had been questioned at the initial stage of the investigation.

Wawryniuk noted that the District Prosecutor’s Office in Starogard Gdański discontinued the investigation in December. – Extensive evidence, including the opinions of experts in the field of firefighting, did not allow for an unambiguous indication of the real cause of the fire – explained the prosecutor. She added that the decision was not final.
