To all those who made decisions regarding the post office, I have pure, human regret. We didn't have to get to where we are today – said Sebastian Mikosz, president of Poczta Polska, in “Fakty po Faktach”. He admitted that, in his opinion, the company “overslept on the growth of several services, not only the courier market.” He also talked about the idea of a kindergarten at the post office.

The guest of “Fakty po Faktach” was Sebastian Mikosz, president of Poczta Polska. Mikosz was appointed president of Poczta Polska at the end of March 2024. Until now, he was, among others, president PLL LOT and deputy head of IATA.

Poczta Polska is a State Treasury company, the largest postal operator on the domestic market. It employs over 66,000 employees and its network includes 7,600 branches, branches and postal agencies throughout Poland. The company said that Poczta Polska recorded a “historic loss” in 2023 and therefore a comprehensive transformation plan is being developed.

– The brain doesn't work, it means the strategy. To all those who made decisions regarding the post office, I have pure, human regret. We didn't have to get to where we are today, where the question is what's next with the post office. I don't like it very much and I would like to manage the mail in such a way that there would be no such questions – admitted Mikosz.

He admitted that Poczta Polska “overslept on the growth of several services, not only the courier market.” – The fact that the courier market has grown so phenomenally was predictable, COVID accelerated it a lot – he said.

– I have the impression that this is our biggest challenge, because Poles send more and more parcels, use parcel machines more and more, (…) but send less and less letters – said the president.

President of Poczta Polska: we have to chase this runaway train

The guest of “Fakty po Faktach” said that he would try to make Poczta Polska a “courier and logistics company”. – We are focused on delivering letters, but we should be focused on delivering parcels, or in other words, parcels. A letter can also become a shipment. Besides, many parcels today are smaller in size than letters, so we can do it – he explained.

– We want to fight for this market. Of course, there are eight thousand operators, but what really counts is four, five, or a few private ones. We are the only state team in this league, he said.

“My resentment towards the predecessors, in quotation marks, comes from the fact that there were several years to do this, and now we have to chase this runaway train on the platform when we can actually see the taillights,” he said.

The new president admitted that the company's goal would be to be “at least among the top five, if not three” most frequently chosen courier operators.

Kindergarten at the post office?

– Today we know that there will be fewer and fewer letters, and parcels will be sent using these parcel devices. This is the question – how to preserve this network of post offices, commonly called offices, which is the treasure of the post office. (…) We should come up with a method for the post office to have some role for citizens – a bit of a commercial role, a bit of a commercial role – said the president.

He admitted that he came up with a new idea when he heard that the Deputy Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy, Aleksandra Gajewska, was looking for points for kindergartens and nurseries. – Then I said: listen, let's be open, let's keep our heads open. Maybe we can participate in the so-called Citizen Service Centers. Maybe we could make it so that a citizen could come to the post office and order an ID card or pick up a passport, or help fill out the form. PIT – he said.

He noted that post offices play a greater role in smaller towns. – When this proposal was made, I said: okay, why couldn't these kindergartens be partially located in our premises – he admitted.

– The point is to really look for original ideas on how to manage this network and the people who trust it – he added. He said that he “hasn't talked to Minister Gajewska about this yet.”

Strike at the Polish Post Office

President Mikosz also referred to the strike of Poczta Polska employees. – It is truly unusual for a member of the Supervisory Board to organize a strike. The presumption is that I will not meet these demands, because as a member of the Supervisory Board, I believe that it would mean a catastrophic situation for the company, not to call it worse, he said.

He admitted that he understands the demands of employees who demand a raise, but Poczta Polska cannot afford it. He added that layoffs are needed.

– Many European countries, in fact all of them, have retained their post offices. However, all of them have gone through huge transformations, just like those awaiting us, he said.

On Saturday Iga Świątek defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. – We are happy together. I think that a postcard with Iga Świątek is an obligation of the post office, right? – said Piotr Kraśko, the host of “Fakty po Faktach”. Sebastian Mikosz agreed with him and said: “we can issue a stamp.”

He clarified that this idea was born during the program. – You gave me this idea, so I think let's go for it – added President Mikosz.
