Stena Spirit. Mother and child accidents overboard, dead. Danish commission: it was not an accident

The tragedy that happened on the Stena Spirit ferry was no accident. A woman and a child fell overboard as a result of a deliberate act, the Danish Maritime Accidents Commission said on Monday. On Thursday, two Polish citizens fell off the ferry – a 36-year-old woman and a seven-year-old boy. Both were found but died in hospital.

Over the weekend, experts from Denmark analyzed the testimonies of witnesses and the recording of the monitoring. “It’s clear that it wasn’t an accident,” commission chief Oessur Jarleivson Hilduberg told radio station P4 Blekinge.

The Danish Maritime Accidents Commission has launched an investigation into the fall of a child and a woman from a ferry as the ship flies the Danish flag. Since it was concluded that there was no accident, the case will be transferred to the prosecutor’s office.

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk has been investigating the murder of a child and the mother’s suicide since Saturday. The Swedish prosecutor’s office in Karlskrona classified the crime as murder.

Tragedy on the Stena Spirit ferry

On Thursday afternoon, Polish citizens, a seven-year-old boy and a 36-year-old woman – the child’s mother, fell off the Stena Spirit ferry sailing from Gdynia to Karlskrona in Sweden. Due to the incident, the ship turned back. A boat was launched immediately and took part in the search operation. After about an hour, the woman and child were found and taken to a hospital in Karlskrona, Sweden.

Rescue services from Sweden and Poland worked on the site using ships and helicopters. On Friday morning, KGP spokesman insp. Mariusz Ciarka reported that the boy and the woman had died.

On Saturday, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk changed the qualification of the act in the investigation into the tragedy on the S ferry – spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk, Grażyna Wawryniuk, told PAP on Saturday.
