Storm Oscar hit the Canary Islands and Madeira, bringing with it heavy rainfall. In places, rainfall totals exceeding 100 liters of water per square meter were recorded in six hours. Thunderstorms and downpours are expected to hit the Iberian Peninsula on Thursday.

In Madeira, rainfall on Monday and Tuesday exceeded warning levels in places. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported that the heaviest rain fell at the mountain station of Chao do Areeiro, with 110 liters of rain per square meter in six hours. The region was on red, the highest level of weather alert, and landslides forced emergency services to evacuate several residents of the city of Funchal.

On Thursday, the Oscar is due to hit the Iberian Peninsula. Rain and thunderstorm warnings are in place in Portugal and Spain. The Spanish meteorological agency AEMET has issued storm alerts for Galicia, Extremadura and Andalusia. In Portugal, the warnings mainly concern the northern part of the country and the coast. Meteorologists predict that the difficult situation in the region may last until Friday.
