Four people died in Houston, Texas, as a result of a severe storm that hit the city on Thursday. The phenomenon was accompanied by hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall. Many districts were under water and hundreds of thousands of homes experienced power outages.

A strong storm rolled through East Texas on Thursday storm, which was accompanied by wind gusts reaching 160 kilometers per hour in places. Flood, wind and even tornado warnings were in effect in many counties. The situation was particularly dangerous in the city of Houston, where the element struck in the afternoon.

Trees, rubble and glass

As Houston Mayor John Whitmire confirmed on social media, four people lost their lives during the storm. Three residents died as a result of being crushed by fallen trees, and a crane fell on one person. The politician informed that the circumstances of all accidents are being investigated by the Houston Police Department.

Due to the weather, flights were suspended at two main airports in the region. In addition, in Harris County, of which Houston is a part, over 870,000 customers were left without power. Power grid operator CenterPoint Energy explained on social media that storm recovery will take approximately 24 hours, and some residents may have to wait even longer for power to be restored.

Whitmire urged Houstonians to stay home on Friday. As he said, the city center was covered with broken glass and broken branches, and there were broken high-voltage wires in the streets. Some districts were completely underwater. For safety reasons, school classes were canceled in the city on Friday.

“In the evening, please do not drive in downtown Houston or anywhere else in the region with storm damage. There is debris, glass and electrical wires strewn across the streets,” the local National Weather Service (NWS) office added.
