A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan on Tuesday evening. Two people died there. The tremors were also felt in other countries. In Pakistan, one person was killed and 150 injured.

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said on Tuesday evening. The quake’s hypocenter was at a depth of 194 kilometers and the epicenter was 47 kilometers from the city of Ashkasham. The tremors were also felt in neighboring countries.

Fatalities, injured

A 13-year-old girl was killed when a wall collapsed on her at her home and injured 150 people in Pakistan’s Swat district. Hospitals there declared a state of emergency, police officer Shafiullah Gandapur told Reuters. In the province of Khyber Pashtunkhwa, a 90-meter wall around a police station collapsed. No one was hurt as a result of this incident.

Shafiullah Rahimi, a spokesman for the Afghan disaster mitigation ministry, said two people were killed in eastern Laghman province.

According to EMSC estimates, the tremors were felt over an area of ​​1000 kilometers by around 285 million people in Pakistan, India, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

In June 2022, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan killed over 1,000 people.
