In Stronie Śląskie (Lower Silesia), the construction of a housing estate of 28 houses for families whose apartments were destroyed during the September flood has begun. The housing estate being built on municipal land is financed from collections conducted as part of the “Entrepreneurs for Flood Victims” campaign.
The first house is to be built by December 17, and all 28 houses by the end of January. The finishing works will last until June 2025. Each building, with an area of 70 square meters, will be equipped with a fully functional kitchen and bathroom.
Cooperation with local government
The construction of the estate is carried out in cooperation with the local government. The Stronie Śląskie commune owns the land on which the houses are built. The local government is also responsible for providing the infrastructure necessary for this investment. The choice of families who will live in the new houses is also the responsibility of the commune, but – as it was announced on Tuesday during the press conference – donors have the right to verify the list of these families. These must be families who lost their homes in the flood.
300 entrepreneurs “collected” 28 houses
The houses are being built with money donated by 300 entrepreneurs. The buildings will be donated to the commune, and their residents will be able to buy them after five years for the price of the land. For the first five years, all home repairs will be made under warranty, and the rent will only cover keeping the homes in good condition.
The mayor of Stronie Śląskie, Dariusz Chromiec, emphasized that thanks to the involvement of entrepreneurs, it was possible to start building houses for people affected by the flood in a relatively short time. “So far, many people cannot return to their apartments because they were damaged or completely destroyed by the flood,” Chromiec said on Tuesday.
At the end of November, the mayor informed that about 100 people in Stronie Śląskie still could not return to their homes after the flood.
“Entrepreneurs for flood victims”
The “Entrepreneurs for Flood Victims” campaign is an initiative of Polish entrepreneurs. As part of this project, so far over PLN 123 million has been donated to help flood victims, of which PLN 23 million in cash and the remaining amount in products and services. The initiative is supported by, among others: BNI, Corporate Connections, Confederation Lewiatan, Employers of Poland and the Polish Business Roundtable.
