The World Bank said Wednesday it suspended financial aid to Sudan after the military overthrew its civilian government. The institution was a close partner of the country, running an aid program for Sudanese families and providing the country with support in implementing vaccination against COVID-19. “I am very worried about the recent events in Sudan,” said David Malpass, the head of the financial institution.

“The World Bank Group suspended payments under all aid programs in Sudan on Monday and stopped implementing new operations. We are watching closely and assessing the development of the situation (in this country – ed.)” – said the head of the World Bank, David Malpass.

Military coup in Sudan

There was a military coup in Sudan on Monday. The coup leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced in a televised speech the dissolution of the civilian-military Sovereign Council and the military-led Prime Minister Abdalla Hamduk government. On the same day, the putschists detained at least five high-ranking government officials.

– I am very worried about the recent events in Sudan. I am afraid of their dramatic impact on the repair and socio-economic development of the state – said Malpass.

At the end of September, the head of the World Bank visited the capital of the country, Khartoum, where – as he emphasized – he discussed “the details of the economic and social transformation of the country”. During the meeting “it was made clear to me that all parties wanted to work together to create a better future for the people of Sudan (…)” added the president of the financial institution.

Before the coup d’├ętat, Sudan began an economic reform program to help the country apply for debt relief, the AFP agency pointed out.
