More than two thousand households in Sukhothai province in Thailand were flooded by floodwaters. The dangerous phenomenon occurred as a result of heavy rains that led to the bursting of dams on one of the rivers.

The northern regions of Thailand have been hit by exceptionally heavy rainfall. There was so much water that the dams on the Yom River broke. Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thapsutin said on Monday that at least two thousand households in Sukhothai province were affected by flooding.

– The water came so suddenly. I saw her coming, said one of the inhabitants of the province.

More rainfall is coming

Everyone went to work to remove the effects of the flood. Village residents and officials filled sandbags to contain the inflow of masses of water and minimize damage to buildings. The scale of the losses incurred is currently difficult to estimate.

“I’m not sure exactly how many people were affected by the flood,” local official Sansak Ongklai said.

On Sunday, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin ordered state agencies to pay special attention to flooded areas. Thavisin also called for preparations for further rainfall that may occur in the coming days.
