Drivers can use the tunnel in Sulejówek again. – What should have taken us half a year, we managed to do in six days – boasts the city's deputy mayor of the express pace of work. But for now it's a makeshift security measure. The crossing was closed after a truck driver hit a beam a week ago.

The tunnel under the railway tracks in Sulejówek, damaged a week ago, was opened on Tuesday – informed the Masovian Voivodeship Road Authority.

– We are just opening the tunnel after an express renovation. What should have taken us half a year, we managed to do in six days – said vice-mayor Remigiusz Górniak in a video published on Sulejówek's Facebook profile. He thanked the railway workers, road workers and, above all, the ITOP company that built the tunnel for their involvement. – Thank you for your great work, commitment and determination. We really did a great thing, emphasized Górniak.

Closure after truck impact

Let us remind you: On April 16, a truck driver hit a safety beam in front of a railway viaduct. Traffic in the tunnel was closed to cars and pedestrians, except for emergency vehicles. Repair work has started. The event did not affect rail traffic.

It turned out that the damaged beam would have to be removed. For now, it has been replaced with two steel beams. They are supposed to be there until the second tunnel opens. – Then the final repair will take place, commissioned as part of a separate procedure – the deputy mayor previously explained.

Authorities they intend to put up signs at the entrance to the tunnel, in accordance with drivers' suggestions. According to the regulations, markings specifying the permitted height of entering a vehicle are not necessary. It appears when the tunnel is a maximum of 4.5 meters, and the one in Sulejówek is higher – 4.6 meters. Officials are also analyzing where to place additional gantries. – So that drivers can physically cope with this height and possibly retreat – explained Remigiusz Górniak.

The tunnel cost PLN 80 million

The tunnel in Sulejówek along Piłsudskiego Street was put into operation in November 2023. The investment was created thanks to the cooperation of the local government of the Masovian Voivodeship, the city of Sulejówek and PKP PLK, and its cost is over PLN 80 million. The 90.5 meter long tunnel replaced the above-ground railway crossing.
