During the Warsaw Security Forum conference, Swiatłana Cichanouska accused Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime of the migration crisis on the border with Poland. – He is fully responsible for organizing what is happening – said the leader of the Belarusian opposition.
The leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Cichanouska met on Wednesday in Warsaw with over a hundred Belarusians living in Poland, thanked Belarusian organizations for the support they give to their compatriots here in Poland. Previously, she was one of the guests of the Warsaw Security Forum.
During the conference, she talked about meetings with Polish authorities, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zbigniew Rau. – During the meeting with Minister Rau, I mentioned to him that Poland could lead our efforts to establish an international tribunal to investigate the crimes of the Lukashenka regime. According to the Chicago and Montreal conventions, Poland has the right to do so due to the hijacking of a Polish plane – said Swiatłana Cichanouska.
– Hundreds of persecuted Belarusians fled to Poland, where they were granted international protection. We believe that this is sufficient reason to initiate an investigation into the violation of the Torture Convention. I also asked President Duda to speed up the opening of cases on the basis of international law, added the leader of the Belarusian opposition.
Swiatłana Cichanouska on the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border
Cichanouska stressed that during Tuesday meetings with President Andrzej Duda expressed her willingness to engage in solving the migration crisis. – The regime in Belarus is fully responsible for organizing what is happening on the border. It is revenge for supporting the democratic movements. We discussed with the president the issues of further actions, cooperation with the European Union and a strategy that will end the crisis and force Lukashenka to pay for it, she stated.
– Only yesterday there were 483 attempts to illegally cross the border with Belarus. These numbers are increasing. So far, five immigrants have died. However, we fear that with the advent of winter, there may be more casualties. This week alone, several airplanes filled with innocent immigrants landed in Minsk. After a few days, they will be transported to the border. God knows what they must experience there – pointed out Cichanouska.
