Sweden’s admission to NATO. Türkiye has taken the first step towards ratification, and the vote in parliament will be crucial

The Turkish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee supported the ratification of the protocol on Sweden’s admission to NATO on Tuesday. The final decision will be made at the plenary session of the Turkish Parliament. Its date is not known yet.

Türkiye is one of two countries (the other being Hungary) that have not yet ratified membership Sweden in the North Atlantic Alliance. Both countries maintain friendly relations with Russia, and their leaders – Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Viktor Orban – z Vladimir Putin.

Ankara has so far blocked Sweden’s admission to the North Atlantic Alliance since the beginning of Stockholm’s accession efforts, emphasizing that the Swedish government should do more to fight Kurdish fighters in its country and other groups that Turkey considers a threat to its national security.

On Tuesday, the Turkish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee supported the ratification of the protocol on Sweden’s admission to NATO. This constitutes the first step towards approval of ratification. However, the final decision will be made at the plenary session of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the unicameral parliament. Its date is unknown.

The head of the committee, Fuat Oktay, said that a vote should not be expected soon. He added that the decision on the date of voting will be made by the Speaker of Parliament.
