Świętokrzyska. They closed the sidewalk. Pedestrians walk in the bicycle lane

The sidewalk was closed on Świętokrzyska Street near Powstańców Warszawy Square. The works are related to the reconstruction of Mazowiecka Street. Many pedestrians, instead of crossing the street, choose a dangerous walk in the bicycle lane. And against the grain.

The problem was brought to the attention of the Warsaw Smog Alarm. Activists reprimanded road workers for organizing traffic that did not take into account the needs of pedestrians. As residents noticed, they do not want to waste five minutes “walking around the entire intersection.” “Everyone walks along the road and the bicycle lane, which takes several seconds. With this paraorganization of traffic, a pedestrian or cyclist being injured by a speeding car is only a matter of time,” they noted.

They appealed to officials and the mayor of Warsaw to intervene. “Discrimination of pedestrians and cyclists cannot be a dangerous routine. And it is,” they said.

Our reporter who was there on Monday had similar observations.

– Dangerous situations happen almost every now and then. Around the third time, the pedestrian does not cross the other side of Świętokrzyska Street in accordance with the regulations, but uses the bicycle lane. This is very dangerous. There are situations in which a cyclist misses a pedestrian by centimeters and sometimes has to swerve onto the road to pass him. In addition, the construction generates a lot of noise, a cyclist may not hear the car behind him – reported Olek Klekocki from tvnwarszawa.pl. The reporter also saw situations in which parents with small children were walking in the bicycle lane.

– The general impression is that this section is very dangerous. This traffic organization is not conducive to pedestrians, it is definitely geared “for drivers”, he summed up.

Explanations from road workers

Jakub Dybalski, spokesman for the Municipal Roads Authority, replies that work is underway to install the traffic lights and connect them. – Naturally, there is not much space, also due to the work of other units – this must cause difficulties. The contractor has until mid-July to complete all works related to Mazowiecka and two intersections (with Świętokrzyska and Kredytowa), he explains.

As he notes, cyclists still have a bicycle lane at their disposal and nothing changes for them. How should pedestrians behave? According to the rules. – Pedestrians should really go around these works. I can only apologize for the inconvenience, but if we erect a multi-ton pole and run cables to it under the sidewalk, we will not avoid closing the sidewalk. Entering the road is dangerous and against the regulations, says Dybalski.

A parking lot is being built under the square

The works are related to the reconstruction of the street Mazowiecka, which will be bidirectional. This is to facilitate communication of the underground parking lot under Powstańców Warszawy Square. Additionally, bus stops will be designated on Mazowiecka Street. “After the reconstruction, bus traffic in both directions will run along the Mazowiecka – Szpitalna route, bypassing Kredytowa and Jasna,” ZDM previously announced.

Construction of a four-story building underground parking lot started in August last year. There are 420 parking spaces planned there. The facility is being built as a concession. IMMO Park Warszawa, owned by Mota-Engil Central Europe SA, covers the entire investment costs – approximately PLN 85 million – and will operate the parking lot for 36 years. After this time, the facility will be handed over to the city for management. The opening of the parking lot is planned for the turn of 2024 and 2025.
