A tragic accident occurred near the mountain village of Gimmelwald in the Swiss Alps. A Canadian tourist fell 400 meters from a suspension bridge. The woman died on the spot.

As confirmed by the police from the canton of Bern, a 31-year-old Canadian woman died while crossing the Nepalese bridge in Gimmelwald (Lauterbrunnen) for reasons that have not yet been clarified.

The services received a report of the accident on Thursday around 2 pm. Specialized rescue services and an alpine ambulance equipped with a helicopter appeared on the scene immediately. But the woman was no longer alive.

A narrow, 80-meter rope bridge is part of the route, the so-called via ferrata, leading from Muerren to Gimmelwald. It is suspended over a precipice almost 400 meters deep. According to the Alpine Club SAC, the largest mountaineering club in Switzerland, this route is considered moderately difficult from a technical point of view, but the breathtaking views attract many tourists.

The police are investigating the causes of the tragedy

Police are investigating the woman’s death. For now, an accident is considered the most likely cause. The 31-year-old traveled the route in the company of several other people.

“On via ferratas, there is an obligation to use belaying. Two carabiners should be snapped on the steel rope. The police confirmed that the tourist was not secured during the accident, even though she was equipped with belay equipment. The investigation is to determine how it happened “- reports the portal “Mercury”.

It has already been confirmed that neither the bridge nor the equipment was damaged or defective at the time of the accident.
