Syria. Israeli airstrike in Damascus. Reports of civilian casualties

The Israeli military carried out an air attack on the center of Damascus overnight from Saturday to Sunday, Reuters reported, citing witnesses and local authorities. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 15 people, including civilians, were killed in the airstrike. In the part of the city that fell under the attack, there is, among others, the headquarters of the Syrian intelligence. An Israeli army spokesman declined to comment.

Reuters reports that Israeli rockets have damaged several blocks of flats in the densely populated Kafr Sousa district in central Damascus. “At 00:22, the Israeli enemy launched an air strike from the occupied Golan Heights, targeting several areas of Damascus and its vicinity, including residential areas,” the Syrian defense ministry said in a statement.

Local security forces, Syrian intelligence headquarters and Iranian installations are stationed in the part of Damascus targeted by Israel, the Guardian said.

Reports of civilian casualties

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 15 fatalities. The organization said civilians were among the victims and the target of the raid was a building near an Iranian cultural center in the capital Syria.

Earlier, the Syrian defense ministry said that according to preliminary findings, five people were killed, including one soldier, and 15 civilians were injured. The resort added that some of them are in critical condition.

An Israeli army spokesman declined to comment.

Israel repeatedly attacked facilities in Syria that belonged to those supported by Iran Shia militias or used by Lebanese Hezbollah. The Israeli authorities have consistently emphasized that they will not allow Syria to become a bridgehead for the Iranian armed forces.
