The Russian air force is trying to carry out provocations over American bases in Syria, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said, noting that since early March it has been observing an increase in “dangerous behavior” by Russian pilots.
“They fly over our bases with armed warplanes, trying to provoke us,” Gen. Michael Kurilla said Thursday during a US Senate hearing.
“It is dangerous, unprofessional and not what we expect from a professional air force. They want to try to renegotiate the conflict resolution protocols they break every day,” added the CENTCOM commander.
Americans fear jihadist attacks
General Kurilla also commented on the threat posed by the so-called Islamic State. – We estimate that within six months they can launch an attack on American or European targets outside Afghanistanwhere they are currently concentrated, he warned.
In early March, America’s top military general, Mark Milley, paid an unannounced visit to a troop base USA in Syria to assess the progress of the operation against IS. The general told traveling journalists that he believed US troops and their Kurdish-led Syrian allies were making progress in ensuring a lasting defeat for the jihadists.
Although IS no longer controls significant areas as it did a decade ago Syria and Iraq, hundreds of fighters are still in isolated locations that are not reached by US troops with allies or supported by Russia regime forces in Damascus. According to US officials, IS can still become a significant threat.
