The Russians evacuated some of their diplomats from Syria. They also took diplomats from Belarus, North Korea and Abkhazia on board the plane, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow announced on Sunday.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a Sunday post on Telegram that on that day, a special flight from the Humeimim base in Latakia transported some of the staff of Russian foreign missions in Damascus to Moscow's Chkalovsky airport.
Employees of diplomatic missions were also evacuated BelarusNorth Korea and Abkhazia (a separatist region Georgia – ed.) – said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow, adding that “the work of the Russian embassy in Damascus is continued.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not directly state in its statement the reason for the evacuation of diplomats, noted the Russian independent portal Meduza.
Established contacts with the rebels who overthrew the Assad regime
Previously, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Russia Mikhail Bogdanov told journalists that Russian diplomats managed to establish contacts with the new authorities Syria. This is the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which led attacks on Syrian government forces and overthrew the Assad regime supported by Russia.
Russian diplomats met with representatives of this group, discussing, among other things, security issues of the diplomatic mission and Russian citizens in Syria, Meduza reported.
The Russian propaganda news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Minsk, that all Belarusian diplomats had been evacuated from Syria.
