These events show that the Russian Federation has limited possibilities of influencing several theaters at the same time – said the head of the National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera, in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24, referring to the situation in Syria. He added that from the point of view of regional security and Polish interests, he sees “many potential threats.”

Syrian rebels announced on Sunday morning the capture of the capital of the country, Damascus, and the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, who had held authoritarian power over this country for 24 years. This is the latest stage of the civil war that has been ongoing since 2011. Assad was supported by, among others, Russia, Iran and Tehran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah.

Siewiera: public opinion must build a proper understanding of the regional consequences

The head of the National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera, commented in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 that these events were undoubtedly “of a global and unprecedented nature.” As he said, it seems to him that “public opinion must build a proper understanding of regional consequences through the prism of political realism.”

– It is worth paying attention to two issues here. This military dimension and this political dimension. In both cases, I have the impression that the optimism associated with the belief that this is a great failure of the Russian Federation is too far-reaching, he said.

He assessed that “this form of optimism can be maintained by global powers that can completely benefit from the withdrawal of some troops or troops.” – However, from the point of view of regional security and serving the interests of the Republic of Poland, I see many potential threats here – said Siewiera.

– Threats or more hope, because it turns out that Russia is so weak that it is unable to maintain its position in the Middle East? – asked the host of the program Piotr KraÅ›ko.

– When it comes to the positions and possibilities of power projection of the Russian Federation, they are indeed limited. These events clearly show that the Russian Federation has limited possibilities of influencing several theaters at the same time. And in a political decision, it withdrew from involvement and support of the Assad regime, he said.
