Szczecin. Accident at Rodła Square. 20 injured, two people in critical condition

A total of 20 people were taken to hospitals in Szczecin after Friday’s accident. A speeding passenger car hit a group of people at Rodła Square, then drove away and collided with three other vehicles. The condition of two people is said to be critical and another four to be serious.

A dramatic accident occurred on Friday at Rodła Square in the center of Szczecin. A 33-year-old man rammed a group of passers-by with his passenger car and then started running away. After driving about a kilometer, it collided with three other cars and injured other people.

The driver was detained and the police ruled out a terrorist attack. Initial findings show that the man was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

As a result of the accident, 20 people were injured. This is one more than initially reported by the services. The 20th person reported to the hospital on Saturday.

The youngest injured person is a 5-year-old child, the oldest is 62 years old. Two people are still in critical condition, four more are in serious condition.

The most seriously injured women were transported to the hospital at Unia Lublin. Three minors are also staying here, including two teenagers, whose condition is described as good.

– Two injured adults and three children came to us. One patient in the most serious condition at the age of 22, the other in a slightly better condition, but also with a multi-traumatic injury, mainly head injuries, at the age of 42 – said on Friday Dr. Grzegorz Czajkowski, doctor on duty at the Hospital Emergency Department of the Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Szczecin.

Three teenagers were also taken to the hospital in Szczecin Zdroje, their condition is also described as moderately good.

Police findings after the accident

The detained driver is a 33-year-old resident of Szczecin, of Polish nationality. According to preliminary police findings, the perpetrator was sober. He was alone in the vehicle. He hit people standing in front of a pedestrian crossing, next to a tram stop. After the accident, he escaped.

– The man drove away from the scene in a different direction, where he caused a collision with three other vehicles. As a result of these collisions, people traveling in these vehicles suffered injuries – reported Paweł Pankau, a junior officer from the Szczecin police.

The prosecutor’s office on the qualification of the act

The police and the prosecutor’s office worked at the scene. – Preliminary activities show that the proceedings will be conducted under Article 173 of the Penal Code, i.e. causing a disaster in land traffic, for which the perpetrator will be punished with from one to 10 years in prison – said Piotr Wieczorkiewicz, spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin.
